Hand subscribing to Amazon Prime Membership

Stepwise Guide: How to Cancel Your Amazon Prime Membership

Shopping online has become more convenient than ever due to the advent of smartphones, tablets, and other similar gadgets. Coupled with an Amazon Prime account, you can enjoy free and fast delivery, easy returns, and seamless checkout. These are the perks that made it an essential part of countless American households.

Despite the aforementioned benefits, many consumers opt to cancel Prime accounts. If you are one of them, you came to the right place. This write-up aims to simplify the whole process via desktop or mobile. Read on.

Before we delve into the details, let’s take a look at how Amazon prime came to be and other complexities that are related to the mentioned paid subscription service.

The Rise of Online Shopping in the United States

It is safe to say that the United States is an online shopping nation. According to Statista, about three-quarters of its consumers have shopped for various items on the Internet.

Consequently, the growing online shopping sector is predicted to generate $1.2 trillion of profit in 2024. That’s not all, by 2029, the appetite of American consumers for online shopping is expected to bring in $1.8 trillion to the economy.

With regard to product categories, electronics as well as fashion accessories are some of the most popular among those of the said market.

Amazon Prime: The History

Launched in 2005, Amazon’s Prime Service initial cost was $79.00 per year for free two-day shipping in the United States on eligible purchases. In 2011, its perks included over 5,000 ad-free movies as well as TV shows. In March 2014, yearly Prime membership shot up to $99.00, which is quite hefty for average consumers.

Fast forward to 2024; Amazon Prime costs $139.00 per year or $15.00 per month, which translates to $180.00 per year. Consequently, students who utilize a valid .edu email address can enjoy Prime Student, which is $69.00 per year, or $7.00 per month, which is equivalent to $84.00 per year.

Putting the said factors into consideration and perhaps the high cost of inflation, you don’t have to wonder why a number of Americans opt for Amazon Prime cancellation.

How to Cancel Amazon Prime

If you want to cancel Prime features from Amazon, then you can refer to our step-by-step guide, which is elaborated in the succeeding paragraphs.

Once again, you’re going to be prompted by Amazon to reconsider. But if you’ve already made up your mind, click “Cancel Membership.”

Chances are Amazon is going to try to make you stay. Again, if you’re serious about your decision, simply ignore the Amazon Benefits button and tap “Cancel My Benefits” as well as “Continue to Cancel.”

By following the aforementioned steps, you can cancel Prime and the range of benefits that Amazon offers.

Why Amazon Prime Cancellation is the Way to go

Minor inconvenience

It’s not the end of the world after you cancel Prime membership. You can still shop via Amazon; you’re just going to lose some benefits that include same-day or next-day delivery on certain items, early access to Prime Day sales, and lightning deals, among others.

Well, it can be inconvenient, if you depend on the said online platform’s two-day delivery or two-hour grocery delivery services, but if you rarely use it for online shopping or your spendings have significantly changed, chances are you’re not getting your money’s worth any longer, and it’s best if you just cancel Prime membership.

Better Deals

You can check other online retailers as well as Internet-based supermarkets to probably get even better deals. On top of these, there are also offline options that you can check. Some, in fact, may offer superior quality minus the financial drawback of Amazon Prime.

Control Impulse Spending

According to a 2023 survey that was published in Statista, in the U.S., an average of approximately $150.00 were spent by consumers each month. In line with this, it can be said that with Amazon Prime, your impulse spending may be further fueled.

Quite simply, the fact that electronics, fashion accessories, supplements, etc., are within reach is a temptation that may wreak havoc to your finances.

Summing up

At the end of the day, if you're a Prime member, you simply need to weigh whether you’re getting better details via the said platform or otherwise. If it’s the latter, then it’s safe to say that Amazon Prime Cancellation is a worthwhile move that offers a number of monetary gains.

Yes. It can be a difficult decision, especially at first. But if you’re not maximizing its perks or it’s taking its toll on your finances, it would be best if you’d spend your hard-earned cash elsewhere.

If you need to cancel Prime subscription and other related services, the tips and pointers above are just what the doctor ordered. You can also take a look at our other blog entries if you need similar solutions.
