Stan streaming app on a smart TV screen with a phone showing subscription settings

If you have been paying for Stan for a while, you have probably noticed the slow creep that hits most streaming services: prices nudge up, add-ons get pricier, and your monthly “entertainment stack” quietly grows into something you actually feel.

Stan’s pricing changes have been most noticeable in two areas:

the core Stan plans (Basic, Standard, Premium), and

the Stan Sport add-on, which can push your total monthly cost up fast.

This article explains what changed, what Stan costs today, and practical ways to keep your bill under control without losing the stuff you actually watch.

What does Stan cost in Australia right now?

Stan generally offers three base plans, plus Stan Sport as an add-on. Today, Stan lists:

Basic: $12 per month

Standard: $17 per month

Premium: $22 per month

Stan Sport add-on: $20 per month (in addition to your base plan)

That last line is the one that catches people out. Stan Sport is typically not a standalone service. If you add it, you pay for a base plan plus Sport, which means your real monthly total can be much higher than you expected.

What changed with Stan’s pricing?

1) Base plans went up

Price adjustments to the base plans have happened in steps rather than one big jump. In 2024, reporting highlighted increases that took Standard and Premium up to $17 and $22 per month, and noted a $2 increase affecting the Basic tier for new customers earlier that year.

Even small increases matter when you keep a subscription running year-round and you have multiple services doing the same thing.

2) Stan Sport became significantly more expensive

For many people, the biggest “wow, really?” moment came from Stan Sport. In 2025, the Stan Sport add-on increased from $15 per month to $20 per month.

A $5 increase does not sound huge in isolation, but it is a big percentage jump, and it stacks on top of your base plan. If you mainly subscribe for sport, it can quickly turn Stan from “reasonable” into “do I still want this every month?”

Only keeping Stan for sport? You might prefer to cancel and rejoin seasonally. Here is how to cancel Stan in Australia: Cancel Stan.

3) More sport value, but also more scrutiny

Sports pricing is always touchy because sport is seasonal. You might watch a lot during certain competitions and barely touch it for months after. When the price rises, people naturally start doing the value check: am I paying for this because I love it, or because I forgot to turn it off?

Why streaming services keep raising prices

Stan is not alone here. Across the industry, price increases usually come down to a few things:

content costs rising, especially exclusives and originals

sports rights being extremely expensive and competitive

platforms focusing more on revenue per subscriber than pure growth

The result is predictable: prices rise, and subscribers get more selective.

6 ways to lower your Stan cost (without going cold turkey)

1) Make sure you are not overpaying for your plan

Many households default to Premium and never revisit it. If you are mostly watching on one screen, you may not be getting value from the higher tier.

2) Treat Stan Sport like a seasonal switch

If you mainly watch specific leagues or tournaments, consider turning Stan Sport on only when you actually need it, then switching it off afterwards. This one change can save you a meaningful amount across a year.

3) Rotate streaming services instead of stacking them

A simple strategy: keep one or two services active at a time. Binge what you want, then swap. Most people do not need five subscriptions running simultaneously.

4) Audit add-ons and forgotten settings

Because Stan Sport is an add-on, it can stay enabled long after your viewing habits changed. Do a quick check of your account and billing so you are not paying $20 per month for something you barely use.

5) Use every price increase as a decision point

Any time a service gets more expensive, ask:

Did I use this weekly in the last month?

Would I miss it if I paused for 30 days?

Am I paying out of habit?

If you hesitate, it might be time to downgrade or rotate.

6) Plan around releases and seasons

For many subscribers, Stan is best as a “come back when there is something big” service. Cancel, return when the next season drops, and leave again when you are done. Streaming is flexible, you do not have to be loyal year-round.

When a price increase is the final straw

Sometimes the math just does not work anymore. If Stan (or Stan Sport) no longer feels worth the monthly cost, you are not alone. Price changes are one of the most common triggers for people to review subscriptions and simplify.

The key is making a deliberate choice instead of letting a subscription run forever on autopilot.
